Why Virat Kohli’s 71st century is taking more time

It’s nearly Corona’s Happy Birthday and due to the second wave and rising cases of Corona, lockdown is about to be imposed again but we are still waiting for Virat Kohli century.

Virat Kohli had scored his  last century in ODI in August 2019 against West Indies since then the century drought is going on.

Now the question here is despite having good form why Kohli is not scoring a century from almost 1.5 years? We had the same feeling when Sachin was struggling to score his 100th international century.

Virat Kohli century
The century drought continues

Right now Virat Kohli centuries in career is equal to 70 and Kohli’s 71st century is taking longer than expected due to the below reasons.

1. The World Stand Still

As we all are aware that there was no international cricket for several months last year due to Covid cases. Even T20 World Cup, many bilateral series had postponed. Indian team hadn’t played any form of cricket for a significant amount of time.

As a result, Virat hadn’t played any competitive cricket till IPL last year. And when he came back like many other cricketers he was out of touch for a while which is expected courtesy to the prolonged Covid break.

2. No support from other teammates

When India toured Australia (2020-21) India was struggling with their opening pair in limited overs as well as in tests.

The pressure was on as India were chasing 350+ in almost every match and poor show from the openers as Rohit wasn’t there. Despite that Kohli scored 78 & 89 in the second and third ODI.

And no support from the middle order resulted in a longer wait for Virat Kohli’s 71st century.

He was looking good for a century in the first innings of a Pink ball test until the miscommunication with Jinks (Ajinkya Rahane) which ran Virat out.

After that Kohli missed the reminder of a test series as he was on paternity leave.

3. Rank turner pitches against England

Now India is playing at home with their full squad but the pitches they got was either a highway or a minefield there was no in between.

In the first test, Kohli batted beautifully in the 4th innings but the target was mammoth and the constant fall of wickets put him under pressure which cost his wicket as well.

In the remaining Test matches, the wicket wasn’t ideal for batting though Rohit, Ashwin and Pant scored a century the rank turners throughout the series abstained Kohli from scoring his 71st century.

4. Sacrificing his spot for youngsters

Not the first time we have seen Kohli sacrificing his spot for youngsters but still many Call him selfish, you guys go get a life.

First, he sacrificed his spot for Ishan Kishan and then for Suryakumar Yadav in the T20 series still scored the most number of runs in the T20 series against England. Eventually, he got a man of the match for his prolific run throughout the series.

In the last T20, he opened with Rohit Sharma and scored 80 not out. He was playing an anchor role as Rohit was attacking from the other end. People believe Kohli isn’t a T20 player but I reckon Kohli is one of the underrated T20 players. He has all the games possible in his armoury.

And if he opens often in T20s we may soon witness Kohli’ T20 century for India. Though India Should go with the Rohit Rahul pair considering inexperience middle order in the T20 world cup this year.

“Virat Kohli will be worried about not scoring a century for a long time” – Aakash Chopra

Even though Virat Kohli isn’t scoring century still he is scoring runs, winning matches for India. Imagine if he is doing just fine when he is a bit off-colour what he will do if he will be at his best.

There shouldn’t be any question marks over his skills and technique. He already proved himself on many occasions and as far as his 71st international century is concerned it’s just a matter of time.

Virat Kohli is just 32 years of age and has already 70 international centuries.

Virat has scored 43 ODI centuries and 27 test centuries. In case he keeps himself fit and made himself available for the next 6 years or so there is no big reason why he can’t break Sachin’s 100 centuries world record.

We all hope Virat will break his century drought in the ODI series against England which is starting from tomorrow.
