Jimmy, Jimmy, Jimmy the English legend, king of swing James Anderson on 10th June 2021 has become the player to play the most test for England (162) surpassing his best friend Alastair Cook (161).
Anderson has taken the most test wicket for England (616*), 4th highest overall just behind Anil Kumble (619), Shane Warne (708), M Muralitharan (800), he is the only fast bowler in the history of test cricket to have 600+ dismissals.
A great number for any fast bowler, this also tells you the fitness level Jimmy Anderson has maintained throughout his career.
Currently, the 38 year old superstar is playing the second test match against New Zealand who is aligned to meet India in the World Test Championship final which will begin from 18th June at Southampton.
As we all know,
“every good thing have to come to an end”,
Is this a verge of Anderson’s remarkable career?
Here are few reasons why James Anderson may retire from International Cricket soon.
The English swing star is already 38 and will complete 39 on July 30th 2021. As athletes grow older their bodies tears becomes more prone to injury, their reflexes and fitness level goes down so it becomes nearly impossible for the human body to bear such a hectic workload at that age.
Moreover, we shouldn’t forget Anderson is a fast bowler. Fast bowler tends to have a short career as compare to spinners or batsmen.
Despite all that, even after 19 years long career years, Anderson is still going good. But who knows the king might be on the verge of leaving his kingdom.
England Selection Policy
We have seen England’s selectors don’t prefer older players much. Especially after the miserable 2015 World Cup, they threw away many senior players & brought young blood in the side which ultimately gave them the result by winning the 2019 World Cup.
Even though Anderson is not playing limited overs cricket but still we saw on a numerous occasion England go with either Broad or Anderson in playing 11 if matches are in the subcontinent.
Nowadays, they both only play together only when England is playing at home or conditions are favouring the seamers.
Also, they have found the luxury of playing an added fast bowler in the form of Jofra Archer & Mark Wood and in order to groom them more either Anderson or broad has to sacrifice their place.
No dependency in limited overs at all
When England has tasted their greatest triumph Jimmy has been their long run horse. But Anderson has played his last ODI back in 2015 since then his focus was entirely on the longer format.
So in limited over England didn’t use him for long, he was their main gun only in the Test since 2015 and that’s why his absence won’t affect them much as they have already got the alternatives.
James Anderson’s Career Stats
Even though people didn’t consider him the limited over bowler still, his numbers are good enough to prove his worth and it speaks on his behalf.
“Legends don’t retire, they leave a legacy to follow”.
I still believe there is a lot of cricket left in Jimmy Anderson and he will continue to entertain us with his swing till the time his body is reacting.
Hopefully, we will witness more legendary spells from the king of swing but not against India ha 😀
