If Football clubs were Indian Premier League teams

The Football season is on the rise whether it’s English Premier League, LaLiga, Bundesliga, the football clubs are playing with their heart out – some for the title, some for the qualifiers and some for avoiding relegation.

The Champions League final 2021 is aligned on 29th May where 2 English clubs Manchester City and Chelsea will face each other at the Ataturk Olympic Stadium in Istanbul.

On the other hand, the Indian Premier League is suspended indefinitely considering the rise of Covid cases in India.

In sports, every clubs and franchise have their differences, similarities, histories and auras. So in this article, we have compared the best football clubs with the IPL teams.

Here are the best football club equivalent to IPL teams.

1. Real Madrid and Mumbai Indians

Real Madrid and Mumbai Indians

Probably one of the biggest clubs in the world of football and cricket respectively. In European and worldwide competitions, Real Madrid has won a record 26 trophies whereas Mumbai Indians have 5 IPL title and 2 Champions League T20 titles.

Madrid holds 34 La Liga titles, a record 13 European Cup/UEFA Champions League titles, 2 UEFA Cups and 4 UEFA Super Cups. In international football, they have achieved a record seven club world championships.

Mumbai Indians is considered a strong enough franchise to beat any International side tells you the reputation of the side.

Both the clubs have a history of the biggest players (Sachin Tendulkar, Cristiano Ronaldo) in the world of sports. Even you look at the current squads they still hold the biggest of the names – Eden Hazard, Sergio Ramos, Karim Benzema for Madrid and Rohit Sharma, Jaspreet Bumrah and Kieron Pollard for Mumbai Indians.

They are without a doubt the most dangerous clubs in their respective sports. And few fans just unnecessarily criticize them just because of the fact they are better than their favourite club or they have a better record against their favourite team or simply because they have achieved what their favourite club hasn’t.

2. Barcelona and Chennai Super Kings

Another colossal Spanish club that has won 20 European and worldwide titles in International Football. 5 UEFA Champions League titles, a record 4 UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup, a joint record 5 UEFA Super Cup, a record 3 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, and 3 FIFA Club World Cup.

Chennai Super Kings have won 3 IPL titles in 11 editions they have played so far. Moreover, they have 2 Champions League T20 trophies in their cabinet as well.

In March 2021, Lionel Messi overtook Xavi’s record of 767 games played for the club and presently has made 776 official appearances in all competitions, while also holding the record for the most appearances in La Liga matches for Barcelona, with 518.

And MS Dhoni has played the most number of IPL matches with a tally of 211 matches in 13 seasons. Much like Lionel Messi, MS Dhoni’s fans can pay their life to see his hero playing the game.

Barca with 26 LaLiga titles is just behind Real Madrid. Like in the world of Football, a game between Barcelona and Real Madrid is considered as El Clasico, in the cricketing world we have a rivalry between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Mumbai Indians (MI).

Their skipper leads from the front, they set the benchmark for their whole side. Probably they have got the best of leaders who know how to use their resources.

Their club or franchise has one of the biggest following in the world just because of one man. MS Dhoni for CSK and Lio Messi for Barca.

3. Manchester United and Kolkata Knight Riders

Here comes the most successful English club Manchester United. They have won more trophies than any other English club, they have 20 Premier League titles, 12 FA Cups, 5 League cup and 21 FA community shield cup which still a record.

United also have 3 UEFA Champions League title (1st English club to lift the title) and each of Europa League and UEPA super cup under their belt. Whereas Kolkata has also lifted the IPL trophy on a couple of occasions (2012 and 2014). However, since then they are a bit off-colour, they haven’t been up to the mark, they are giving few promising performances here and there but not leaving up to the expectation.

Unlike KKR, United is having a much better season this year. They are in the finals of the Europa League (Which they won in 2017), they are unlikely to win the Premier League title this year as the city is marginally ahead of them but still they are maintaining the second spot in the points table.

Back in 2007-08, they had lifted the Champions trophy but since then they are on and off. The last Premier League was in the 2012-13 season. So it’s been a significant time they don’t have the Premier League Title.

Like Red Devils, KKR is also finding ways to compete. Even though they aren’t at their peak, they are still producing magical performances. United have been led by legends of the game like Giggs and Van der Sar, Scholes and Ferdinand while the likes of Ricky Ponting, Sourav Ganguly, Brendon McCullum and Chris Gayle has served for KKR.

Despite they aren’t winning the competitions but also they aren’t letting the other sides winning the competition easily. They are giving a tough fight to the opponents. They are doing their level best to abstain from other sides from winning a title.

4. Bayern Munich and Sunrisers Hyderabad

Bayern Munich of Germany and Sunirisers Hyderabad have a familiar graph of consistency. Dominant, Firepower, Class and above all their credentials as champions.

These two have always been considered favourites to win the UEFA Champions League and IPL respectively.

However, after reaching the Knock Out stage they 9 out of 10 times miss out on the final hurdle.

Bayern did win the Champions League in 2020, but in doing so they were outwitted several times at semi final stage. Sunrisers on the other hand also have similar luck, they did win the IPL in 2016 but like Bayern have faced elimination in knockouts on multiple occasions.

One thing that makes these two giants familiar is the fans. A great fan base and international reputation have created an amazing image for both all across the world.

5. Liverpool and Rajasthan Royals

LiverPool and Rajasthan Royals

The English Red and Rajasthani Rajwade won a major title won back since then they are trying to recreate those glory days. Both these teams have decent players on board and on their day they can challenge the champion sides.

Mohamed Salah, Mane, Diogo Jota are few stars from Liverpool who can single handedly destroy the opponents and for Rajasthan Royals also its English players – Jos Buttler, Ben Stokes, Jofra Archer along with their new skipper Sanju Samson and Chris Morris (costliest player of the IPL 2021). However, Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer’s injury concerns hurt them a lot this season.

Another similarity between both the club is their unpredictability. On their day they can beat the biggest giants in the competition but when it’s not their day they will get thrashed by minnows as well.

Every season both comes in the season with a lot of hype and expectation from the fans but failed to live on the expectations. Hopefully, in the upcoming season, we will witness their vintage performances.

6. Leicester City and Delhi Capitals

Delhi Capitals and Leicester City are the unknown figures in the league. Hardly challenging for the title and inconsistent in performances. One season both can be as good as challenging for the title but the next season could end in misery.

Although Leicester won the Premier League in 2016, that remains their only achievement in recent memories. Both Delhi and Leicester have always struggled to perform against the big sides in the league.

When it comes to the national team both these teams have contributed heavily to the setup. Players like Rishabh Pant for India and Ben Chilwell for England are the feather in the cap.

Interestingly, legendary players of their respective games have represented the clubs. Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir for Delhi while Gary Linekar has represented Leicester City.

7. Tottenham Hotspur and Kings XI Punjab

Spurs and Punjab Kings

They both are close but yet so far, Punjab Kings and Tottenham Hotspurs have always lacked the cutting edge when it comes to silverware.

Since 2008 neither Punjab nor Tottenham have won any trophies. Although, both have always been there and there about, getting over the line and winning things has never been their strong point.

Spurs in 2019 reached the Champions League Final and Punjab reached the IPL final in 2014, but those performances remain their best in the lot.

Speaking of positives, both teams have a huge brand value and earned millions off the pitch. The right investment in the squad may lead to future success for both the giants.

8. Arsenal and Royal challengers Bangalore

Arsenal and Royal Challengers Bangalore

World class players, great heritage and but expectations have always let them down. Royal Challengers Bangalore and Arsenal, both kicks start the season with huge expectations but ultimately towards the end both fail to rack up any serious efforts to win the league.

Arsenal hasn’t won the league since 2004 while RCB has been close at times but never tested the glory days of winning the league.

Like Arsenal in 2006, RCB has reached a couple of IPL finals but both have ended in disappointment. Ultimately giving them the tag of Chokers.

Off the field, both the clubs are based in wonderful cities like London and Bangalore respectively where they have been big fish in the financial market. Also, both clubs have been blessed with iconic stadiums like Emirates and Chinnaswamy having huge capacity.

Conclusion

We have witnessed many great players, great performances, great comebacks from all these clubs. Legends come and go but they leave a Legacy to follow.

Sports is the greatest leveller, the greatest teacher of all time. They are Rivals on the field but a great friend off the field. How often we have seen players appreciating each other. They carry tremendous mutual respect which is heartwarming to see. Even a lot of Footballers shares a great bond with few cricketers.

Credit to the IPL as Cricket is also getting recognized on the global level. And the fact forced us to write a comparison article between the top football clubs and Indian Premier League (IPL) Sides 😀
