4 Dhoni’s Decision which proved why he is a Gentleman

If cricket is a gentleman’s game then MS Dhoni is surely one of the gentlemen of the game.

There are many icons in every other sport which sets a benchmark for the upcoming generation. Even after their retirement, they leave their legacy to follow. MS Dhoni has surely done that. He is the one whose advice is like gold for any young player.

Here are a few instances which proved why MS Dhoni is a gentleman of the game.

1. Stretching Faf Duplessis Legs

Remember, Gandhi- Mandela series back in 2015. It was the decider of the series. India and South Africa both were on the scoreline of 2-2. South Africa was going so well courtesy of Quinton de Kock, Faf Duplessis and Ab De Villiers.

Faf was hitting the ball so well but he was suffering from hamstring problems. South African physio was constantly checking him but after hitting the ball Faf was feeling the pain. Suddenly after hitting a few sixes to Axar Patel Faf fallen down on the pitch then till the time physio come Dhoni came to the rescue and stretched Faf’s leg so that Faf could bear the pain.

The incident melted the heart of the many fans over the world. One more incidence happened in this match where Wankhede crowd were cheering Ab De Villiers as he is our own player and Rohit Sharma went to the crowd and told them “come on, he isn’t our player” ๐Ÿ˜€

2. Giving a Winning Hit to Kohli

2014, World T-20 semi-final against the same opposition South Africa where India had to chase 170 odd runs to win.

Kohli was unstoppable in that tournament so as in that match. He almost single-handedly chased down that total.

After 18.5 overs scores were level, India just needed a winning run and MS Dhoni was on strike, the crowd was expecting a six from MS. But guess what he defended the last ball of Steyn’s over so that Kohli can hit a winning shot.

Even in a press conference, Kohli told he is so grateful to MS for such a kind of memories.

3. His words to Joginder Sharma before Final over

2007 T-20 World cup final, Pakistan were cruising towards victory. India had to defend 13 runs in the last over to become the first T-20 champion.

Who will bowl the last over? The experts thought India’s reliable spinners, Harbhajan Singh. But Dhoni had some different plans. He went with Joginder Sharma by saying

” Try your best if it didn’t come off I will take the blame”.

This is revealed by Joginder Sharma himself. Imagine how much confidence these words would’ve given to Joginder Sharma. Ultimately, he delivered also.

Another example of a skipper leading from the front, isn’t it?

4. Giving Captaincy to Ganguly in his last test

Before Dhoni, we 90’s kid better know who actually built Indian cricket team. He is None other than Sourav Ganguly.

Like Dhoni built Rohit, Virat, Dhawan, Ashwin & Jaddu. Dada has shown so much faith on the likes of Yuvraj Singh, Harbhajan Singh, Zaheer Khan, Ashish Nehra, Viru and made them a superstar.

Dada was the captain who showed Indian team how to win in overseas condition & gave a strong message to the world we are here to fight. His contribution is a little bit underrated that’s what I feel. Even Dada is one of the biggest reason behind Dhoni’s selection.

” Dhoni ko try karte hai (Let’s try out & give a chance to Dhoni”) – Ganguly to selectors.

So, it was 2008 India was playing home series against the mighty Aussies India was leading the series by 1-0 with 1 test to go. Kumble already hanged his boots in the previous test which was in Delhi.

It was Ganguly’s turn to say good-bye to cricket. The test match was in Nagpur (my old hometown) and India were on the driving seat. In between, we fans had seen something heartwarming again. Dhoni handed over the captaincy to Sourav Ganguly for last few over as a tribute to him.

So these were a few heartwarming gestures from MS Dhoni which are still alive in fans heart. He came, he conquered and left silently.

We often don’t respect a precious thing we have until it’s gone. The same people who used to blame Dhoni are now releasing how much important he was to Indian cricket.

Now, the same thing is happening with Kohli as well. Other countries are dying to have a player like him & we are unnecessarily criticising and blaming our own captain. This thing definitely needs to be addressed.
